3 Aspects that Make Haverford College Unique
I recently attended the HECA (Higher Education Consultants Association) conference in Philadelphia and was able to visit some schools in the area. I will be posting this information over the next few weeks.<
Haverford College is a small liberal arts college with 1,200 students. If you were to use a Boston accent, it kind of sounds like that school in Cambridge, but there are many differences. I learned some new things about Philadelphia in addition to the schools I visited. For instance, Philly is known for much more than its Philly Cheese steaks; it is also known for being #1 for Millennials and #1 for Acapella groups. There are many things that I learned about Haverford, but I thought I would share three things that stood out the most:
70% OF STUDENT HOUSING IS “SINGLES” – IT’S A GREAT ENVIRONMENT TO GET WORK DONE WITHOUT THE DISTRACTIONS
60% OF FACULTY LIVE ON CAMPUS WHICH MAKES THEM NATURALLY MORE ACCESSIBLE
HONOR CODE, ADMINISTERED BY STUDENTS, COVERS EVERYTHING FROM WHERE AND WHEN ONE CAN TAKE FINAL EXAMS, TO THE ALCOHOL POLICY
Haverford College is a small liberal arts institution that places a strong emphasis on academic rigor and intellectual exploration. It fosters an environment where students are encouraged to think deeply and critically, which creates a distinctive academic culture. This atmosphere of intellectual curiosity can be highly rewarding for students who thrive in such a setting, but it may not appeal to everyone, especially those who are looking for a more relaxed academic experience or a larger university environment.
One of the key features that sets Haverford apart is its intimate, close-knit campus community, which is complemented by its strong academic partnerships. Haverford has a bi-college relationship with Bryn Mawr College, which allows students to take courses and participate in extracurricular activities at both institutions seamlessly. This partnership greatly expands academic and social opportunities for students, offering them the best of both worlds: the personal attention and tight-knit community of a small school combined with the resources and offerings of another nearby college.
Additionally, Haverford’s cross-registration programs with Swarthmore College and the University of Pennsylvania further broaden the academic horizons for students. This unique system means that, despite Haverford’s small size, students have access to a vast array of courses, research opportunities, and faculty expertise across four prestigious institutions. Whether a student is interested in niche subjects or interdisciplinary studies, this network ensures that almost any academic interest can be pursued in depth.
